I don’t like practicing with metronomes. There I said it. Trying to play music while an annoying TICK TOCK controls my pace is a mild form of torture. I’d much rather practice with a drum machine; same steady beat, much more musical sounds. That being said; I can’t find a drum machine app for the Iphone that I can figure out how to work. They all seem preprogrammed to play hip hop beats. Nothing wrong with hip hop, it’s just not what I’m practicing.
But I DO like to play in time, so let’s look at the app. The Metronome app by Ultimate is easy to use. To set the tempo you just slide your finger along the edge of the +/- wheel in the middle of the screen; right for faster, left for slower. You can also set the tempo by tapping (along with the recording you’re trying to learn, or your best guess) on the button labeled “TAP”. The tempo is shown in a large display so you can set it to specific tempo given on sheet music.
It’s easy to change meter, just ouch the number and pick the one you want. It will even keep 13/4 time, Handy for some of my friends in Oxford Farm Report. 6 choices of subdivision are available so you can break the meter down into the smallest note you need without doing math.
I still don’t like metronomes, but if I’m going to use my Iphone to practice, this is the one I’ll use.
