Just had the greatest rehearsal with Brad, 50 year old engineer beginner guitar student, Matt, faithful drummer friend, Heather, my goto female vocalist and Conor, the bass student from across the hall. When you combine musicians who’ve never played together you never know what will happen, it could flop or fly from the start. This time it was great. With a grin, Brad made a few self disparaging remarks that put the younger guys at ease. Conor and Matt took a few minutes to feel out their borrowed instruments (had to use a Roland electronic drum kit to fit everybody in my lesson room and Conor drives an old moped that he rebuilt) which morphed smoothly into a jam groove. Being the task master that I am, I stopped it and counted off Show Me The Way, a tune Brad has worked up for our studio concert on November 27th. From the first bars it was obvious that everybody had done their homework. Locked it in tight and soon discovered that the weakest part was my Talk Box solo (Hey, it’s harder than it looks). Halfway through the song Stefan, a vocal student, showed up early for his lesson. He took the lead so Heather and I could surround him with harmony.
Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t perfect. We’ve got work to do, but, on the first try it sounded so promising that people were stopping by to see what was going on. The work will get done. The individual practice this week will be more focused and meaningful knowing that our efforts will be rewarded next Saturday when we meet again. Gotta get that Talk Box technique down!
