Hot Rods Drumsticks review
Why am I, a guitarist, reviewing drum sticks? Well, have you ever played a gig where the drum volume was killing you on stage? Perhaps a small party, coffee shop or acoustically live hall? Or have you even had to work with a young drummer who hasn’t fully developed his dynamic control (in other words loud as crap and can’t seem to help it). Well here’s a solution to all those problems.
The composite nature of Hotrods allow a drummer to strike the drum with the velocity they would normally use without as much volume. The tip is softer than a regular drum stick without creating a muffled tone. The drummer feels like he’s “hitting” the drum just as hard, but the noise is cut by close to half. When playing drums a certain amount of motion is necessary to create the beat and to get to all those different instruments on time. Hotrods have a wood stiffness and weight that allow the normal wrist snap of proper percussive articulations.
The only down side I’ve found is that they sound a little odd on toms, similar to brushes; not bad, but not the usual “tom-tom” sound.
