Born in the wilds of Kentucky, Ben was given his first guitar at age 12 by his uncle. He was taught an Em Chord and proceeded to play it for the next 6 months until his uncle returned. He grew up on a mix of John Denver, the Doobie Brothers, and gospel music.
High school choir, musical plays, and marching band left their own unique chisel marks on the mold of his musical character.
Ben received a Bachelors of Music Education degree from Morehead State University where he also studied voice, and a Masters in Music Education degree from the University of Kentucky. He has fifteen years’ experience teaching high school and has taught privately for 10 years.
Ben has played in many bands over the last 37 years including White Johnny and the Spine Poodles (prog punk aka progressive punk aka pronk), East 60 (alt country aka alternative country), Whisper Garden (darkly literary blues), Fuego Latino (Latin explosion) and Caribbean Blues (trop rock aka tropical rock), and also the usual variety of dance bands (he’s performed at a LOT of wedding receptions and bar mitzvahs).
Currently he sings and plays solo, and with Hard To Handle, in your face classic rock.
When not managing MoreThanGuitar.com, he writes and records songs; plays gigs; teaches guitar, bass and voice at The Doo Wop Shop; creates instructional videos for guitar and ukulele; and rides his American Quarter Horse, Thunder.
